How can I seek the Lord? If you’re like me, you might think “seeking the Lord” simply means to “pray longer, pray louder and probably fast”. While Scripture does mention prayer and fasting with the right attitude, it also includes other, possibly surprising ways.
1. Call upon God and pray to him Jeremiah 29:12-14a (NIV
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.
Seek God by calling upon Him and praying. (Jer 29:12-14)
2 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
Through prayer we have access to deep encounters with the heart and mind of our heavenly Father. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not (KJV). God longs for us to call to him as our source of life, wisdom, guidance, and truth. He longs to answer our calls by shepherding us into a lifestyle of continually seeking and receiving revelation from his word and Spirit. But in order for us to truly engage with God in prayer, we must learn what it means to listen.
3. Serve God with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind
1 Chronicles 28:9 (NIV)
“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
Seek God by serving Him wholeheartedly (1Chron 28:9)
4. Cast your cares upon the Lord
Psalm 55:22 (NIV) Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
Seek God by casting your cares upon Him. (Ps 55:22)
5. Keep your tongue from evil, Turn from evil, Do good, Seek peace and pursue it
Psalm 34:12-16 (NIV) Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. Seek God by turning from evil and doing good (Psalm 34:12-16)
6. Forsake evil ways and thoughts .Isaiah 55:6-7 (NLT) Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong.
Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously. Seek God by forsaking evil ways and thoughts (Isaiah 55:6-7)
7. Have clean hands, Pure heart, Don’t lift your soul to idols, Don’t swear by what is false
Psalm 24:4-6 (NIV) He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.
He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Saviour. Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Seek God by having clean hands and a pure heart (Ps 24:4-6)
8. Doing what’s right and live humbly Zephaniah 2:3 (NLT) Seek the Lord, all who are humble, and follow his commands. Seek to do what is right and to live humbly.
Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you—protect you from his anger on that day of destruction.
Seek God by doing what’s right and living humbly (Zeph 2:3)
Do you know other ways Scripture says we should seek God? I’d love to include all the Bible says. Let me know in the comments session.
